La infección asociada a la asistencia sanitaria en el entorno laboral

Resumen

La infección asociada a la asistencia sanitaria (IAAS) es la complicación más frecuente en pacientes hospitalizados. Además, la infección de herida quirúrgica (infección del lecho quirúrgico –ILQ–) es la tercera IAAS en frecuencia después de las infecciones urinarias y respiratorias, y la primera entre los pacientes sometidos a una intervención quirúrgica. En 3 de cada 4 fallecimientos de pacientes quirúrgicos con ILQ el fallecimiento se puede atribuir a dicha infección.

El impacto económico y sanitario que representan y las implicaciones legales que pueden ocasionar justifican el interés que deben tener todos los cirujanos en conocer, controlar y disminuir en lo posible la tasa propia de infección.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las definiciones vinculadas con las infecciones relacionadas con la asistencia sanitaria, así como estudiar las actuaciones preventivas y terapéuticas que han de permitir controlar esta temida complicación.

Abstract

The infection associated with healthcare is the most frequent complication in hospitalized patients. In addition, surgical wound infection (surgical site infection –SSI–) is the third infection associated with healthcare in frequency after urinary and respiratory infections and the first among patients undergoing surgery. In 3 out of 4 deaths of surgical patients with SSI the death can be attributed to this infection.

The economic and health impact that they cause and the legal implications that they can cause justify the interest that all surgeons must have in knowing, controlling and diminishing as much as possible their infection rate.

The objective of this work is to analyze the definitions related to infections associated to healthcare, as well as to study the preventive and therapeutic actions that have to control this dreaded complication.
